Ralf Ebinghaus is an analytical and environmental chemist and Director of the Hereon Institute of Coastal Environmental Chemistry in Geesthacht, near Hamburg, Germany.

He is also Professor (h.c.) at the Faculty of Sustainability Sciences at Leuphana University of Lüneburg. His research focuses on source identification, occurrence and fate of persistent contaminants in coastal, marine, and polar environments with special emphasis on per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) and alternative flame retardants.


Ralf is editor of the EGU Open Access Journal "Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics", editor of "Chemosphere" and was editor of “Environmental Chemistry” (until 2020). He has published more than 220 articles in peer reviewed journals and several book chapters (h-Index = 67) and has co-edited three books.

Ralf is member of the Pool of Experts for the United Nations World Ocean Assessment, was Visiting Professor for Senior International Scientists awarded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Member of the Round-Table “Internationalization of Education, Science and Research: Abatement of Marine Pollution” of the German Federal Government.
